As a synthwave producer, should you focus on quality or on quantity?

The Quality vs Quantity Spectrum is a terrible mental model for synthwave producers, here's why.

It supposes that the higher the Quantity of output, the lower the Quality. And the higher the Quality of the output, the lower the Quantity must be.

• You can't get better at anything without practicing and without a large body of work
• Mastery of any craft takes years, possibly decades of dedicated study and MAKING the thing you want to make
• No artist (musician, painter, dancer, writer, sculptor, filmmaker, etc) ever in history made a masterpiece on their first ever piece of work

A better way to think of Quantity and Quality instead of on opposite ends of a spectrum, is on the circumference of a circle. So to get to Quality you go through Quantity first and always circle back, forever and ever.

Do you want to become a better synthwave producer? Then increase your output of finished tracks (Quantity) and the Quality will take care of itself

Focus on doing better work with every track. Find ways to improve 1% with every track. Find ways to push the boundaries of your abilities and to step outside of your comfort zone.

This must be a conscious effort because by nature, we’re hard wired for comfort and safety.

Don’t be afraid of building your body of work. Focus on quantity and the quality will take care of itself.
